As a photographer, I’ve had the honor of capturing countless senior cap and gown sessions over the years. There's something uniquely special about this moment—it's the culmination of years of hard work, late nights, and unforgettable memories. As a photographer, my goal is to make sure your session feels just as exciting and relaxed as it should be.

If you're gearing up for your senior photos, here are some tips and tricks to ensure your cap and gown session goes off without a hitch. Whether you’re nervous about being in front of the camera or just want to get the best shots possible, I’ve got you covered!

1. Let’s Start with the Basics: Gown and Cap

The cap and gown are the stars of the show, so let’s make sure they’re looking their best.

- Make Sure It Fits: A gown that’s too big or too small can distract from the photos. I’ll help adjust it during the shoot, but you’ll want to ensure it fits well beforehand.

- Check for Wrinkles: A wrinkled gown can be distracting, and trust me, you don’t want to spend your time worrying about it in the middle of your session. If you can, steam or iron it beforehand. Don’t worry—I’ll smooth it out during our session if needed.

- Cap Placement: The cap should sit comfortably on your head, but not too tight. It’s easy for the cap to shift out of place, so I’ll help with the final adjustments to make sure it stays put. A slightly tilted cap can add a nice touch, too!

- Wear something dressy under the gown: Wear something dressy under the gown whether that is a cute dress or a button-up shirt and slacks. Not all the pictures will be of you in just your cap and gown.

2. Feel Comfortable and Confident

Your senior photos should be a reflection of *you*. If you’re not feeling your best, it’ll show in the photos. Here are some tips to help you feel confident in front of the camera:

- Hair and Makeup: You want to feel like yourself, but a little extra touch can go a long way. Simple, natural hair and makeup work best for these photos. Don’t feel pressured to go overboard—just make sure you’re comfortable and feel like *you*.

-What you wear underneath: When picking what you wear underneath make sure you feel comfortable and confident in it. Also make sure it also is free of wrinkles and stains too.

3. We’re a Team! Posing Tips from Your Photographer

I’m here to guide you through every step of the way, and while I’ll offer some suggestions, it’s important to find what makes you feel most comfortable. Here are some posing tips that’ll help create flattering, relaxed shots:

- Stand Tall, But Relax: I know it’s tempting to stiffen up, but the best photos come when you’re feeling relaxed and natural. Stand tall with your shoulders back, but don’t tense up. Just breathe and let yourself feel the excitement of the day.

- Smile Naturally: I always encourage my clients to think of something that makes them laugh or smile. That’s when the magic happens. No forced smiles—just real, happy moments!

- The “Classic” Cap Toss: I’m sure you’ve seen the iconic cap toss photo a million times. It’s a must-do! But remember, we’re going for joy and spontaneity, not perfection. It’s all about capturing that moment when your cap is flying and you’re in the air with excitement.

- Close-Up Shots: A few close-ups of you adjusting your cap, holding your diploma, or giving a soft smile make for great portraits. These shots are perfect for yearbooks and family albums.

4. Personalize the Session: Showcase Who You Are

This is your time, so don’t hesitate to add a personal touch. The more you can showcase your personality, the better!

- Bring Props or Items That Matter to You: Whether it's a sports jersey, a musical instrument, a favorite book, or a piece of artwork you’ve created, incorporating personal items can help make the session feel more “you.”

- Decorate Your Cap: Many seniors love decorating their grad caps with quotes, school logos, or even a special design. If you’ve done this, we’ll be sure to capture it in the photos.

- Include Your Friends or Family: While the focus is on you, I love incorporating friends or family into the session as well. It’s a celebration of all the people who’ve supported you along the way!

5. Location, Location, Location

While we can make any location look great, picking a backdrop that fits your style and personality is key. As your photographer, I’ll work with you to find the perfect spot:

- On Campus: A photo near your school, on the football field, or in front of your favorite building adds a nostalgic and personal touch to the session.

- Nature: If you’re into outdoor vibes, we could head to a park, beach, or garden. Natural light creates beautiful, soft portraits that never go out of style.

- Urban Settings: For a more modern, edgy look, urban backdrops like city streets, murals, or local landmarks can make for a fun and unique photoshoot.

6. Take Your Time and Enjoy the Moment

Graduation can be a whirlwind of emotions, and sometimes it feels like everything’s happening so quickly. The goal of your senior photos is to freeze these moments in time and really capture how special they are.

Take a breath, enjoy the session, and have fun with it! After all, this is a celebration of everything you’ve achieved. Let’s create memories that you’ll look back on with pride for years to come.

7. Trust Your Photographer

You’ve chosen me because you trust me to capture this important milestone, and I promise to do just that. From the first click to the final shot, I’ll guide you through every step of the process to make sure you feel comfortable and confident.
